4501 - Portraits of home
Compared to other metropolises, the city of Berlin is still a young subject in visual arts. It only began in the 18th century that artists increasingly dealt with the urban space, and in the 19th century, Berlin also became the location of literary works.
In 1861, Moabit and Tiergarten, Wedding and Gesundbrunnen were still beyond the city limits. Therefore, they were of lesser importance for
the arts and a lot less represented than the historic Berlin-Mitte.
This room presents a small selection of the artistic examination of Berlin-Mitte from the 18th to the 21st century. Beyond their aesthetic value, some of the artworks are also valid as historic sources. Other pictures document an atmosphere that was once captured in a particular place.
Nowadays, we know how powerfully well-known pictures and texts shape the perception of an urban space. Therefore here; we direct the view to places in Berlin with infrequent visual representation.
