Name changes in the neighbourhood Afrikanisches Viertel

The discussion about street names in the neighbourhood Afrikanisches Viertel goes back to the 1980s. In 2016, the local district assembly of Berlin-Mitte finally mandated the district office to rename three of the streets. Their names commemorated people embroiled in colonial crimes. For the new street names, members of the public submitted 192 proposals. On this basis, it was mandated by the district office to rename Lüderitzstraße as Cornelius-Fredericks-Straße, Petersallee as Anna-Mungunda-Allee and Maji-Maji-Allee as well as the Nachtigalplatz as Manga-Bell-Platz. The last streets were renamed in August 2024.
