Areas next to streams and rivers were considered to be particularly valuable long before industrialization began. Their water was very suitable for agricultural and commercial activities. In the 19th century, the course of many waters was adjusted in order to create land for to build on. Sheet piling with lined up wooden piles reinforced the banks and protected the hinterland from flooding. The wood piles shown in this exhibition are from sheet piling on the banks of the river Panke at the watermill.
