Teaching and learning
“The house loses nothing!” goes the saying - especially not its own history. The Mitte Museum building was built between 1864 and 1866 as the 32nd parish school. The members of the parish of St. Paul had purchased the property to build a private elementary school here. Gesundbrunnen was incorporated into Berlin in 1861, which meant that the city was responsible for building schools. City planning officer Adolph Gerstenberg designed the building. It can be considered the prototype of a municipal school at the time. Up to 400 children were taught here at the same time until 1926. The building remained a place of education for almost the entire time. It became a museum in 1989. Today it is the oldest municipal building in the Mitte district of Berlin and one of the oldest school buildings in Berlin.
