In the beginning was the bear

A Berlin bear figurine intended as a souvenir was found in the museum depot. What was it doing there? Is it not the purpose of a souvenir to leave the city it represents?

Soon, the bear became the inspiration for an idea: The museum thought that Berlin’s identity and public image could be traced by collecting its souvenirs from different periods. Some are presented here. To this day, the growth in Berlin tourism brings a steady increase in the range of available souvenirs, not just in museum shops.
